SETH WOKE him with a sharp tap to the shoulder. “Dante, something’s happened,” Seth said.

Dante’s eyes flew open, and he blinked Seth and Gavin into focus. Dante glanced behind him at Victor, but he didn’t look like he had moved at all since the last time Dante had checked on him.

“Artie was attacked by pack males just a couple hours ago,” Gavin said.

Dante came immediately awake. No one had called to ask permission to come into his territory. A pack entering without permission was serious business. It usually meant someone was testing how effective a pack’s defenses were, prep for a takeover.

Artie kept his nose down and stayed out of trouble, and Victor pretended he didn’t exist.

He climbed out of bed and felt the weave. Michael, Lex, and Ricco were out in the city somewhere. They were the closest to send.

“When was this?” he asked, throwing on a pair of pants.

“Not quite two hours ago.”

Dante grabbed his phone and called Ricco. Getting no answer, he frowned and touched the weave. He got a vague, almost sleepy response. He tried Michael and Lex next and told them to meet at Artie’s and see what was up. He tried Ricco a second time but got the same sleepy response, and he didn’t pick up his phone. Annoyed, he sent a call to bring him home immediately.

He turned to Gavin. “Lock down the house, and I want patrols out now in pairs. Seth, take Andrew to see Artie. Call me when you meet up with Lex and Michael.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

Within minutes everyone was up and about, the cubs carefully contained in the pack room with TV, video games, and snacks to entertain them.

An hour later Ricco still hadn’t returned, but Andrew called with more information. Two males had broken into Artie’s shop only minutes after Jesse stopped by to deliver a note for Dante. They snatched the note and took off, heading outside the city for Lloyd Emerson’s lair.

Dante’s worry spiked, and he called for Seth, Lex, and Michael to meet him at Lloyd’s place.

Taking Gavin and Blaine with him, he left Brice at the house and went to see if the invading pack was still around.
